An Open Letter to YAB Chief Minister YB Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Hajiji Haji Noor
Time for Malaysia to Embrace Mediation Reforms Like India
I wanted to send this email directly to you, YAB Chief Minister, but I've decided against it—my previous emails to you and your ministers have gone unanswered, lost in the shuffle of bureaucracy. Instead, I'm sharing it openly here, in the hope that public visibility will finally spark the dialogue our communities deserve. If this reaches you, great. If not, perhaps it will inspire others to join the call.
Subject: Urging Modernization of Mediation for Faster Housing Dispute Resolutions in Sabah.
Dear YAB Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Hajiji Haji Noor,
I recently came across an inspiring message from India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who highlighted the timeless value of mediation in resolving disputes: "Mediation has always held an important place in India’s traditions. The new Mediation Act focuses on modernisation and other such aspects with regard to mediation." This forward-thinking approach is already transforming conflict resolution in India by embracing tradition alongside innovation. One can't help but wonder: What is preventing our present government in Sabah/Malaysia from following India's lead and modernizing our own mediation frameworks, especially in critical areas like housing disputes? Implementing similar reforms could bring swift, cost-effective solutions to countless families including those facing eviction fears, tenancy conflicts, and skyrocketing rental issues. As a concerned resident, I urge you to consider championing such progressive legislation to build a more harmonious and efficient housing ecosystem for all Malaysians. Your leadership could set a benchmark for other states and truly honour our multicultural traditions of dialogue and compromise. Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to seeing positive changes that reflect the people's needs. Best regards,
Luqman Michel
